What Is Tyre & Alloy Wheel Insurance?

It’s likely we’ve all been there… that notable “rumble” or the alarm on the dashboard alerting you to the fact you have a flat tyre. What’s gone wrong now? How badly damaged is the tyre? Is it going to be repairable or will you have to suffer the expense of a whole new tyre? Moreover, what if it’s not just the tyre that needs attention… is the alloy wheel ok too?

Separately, what if you’re parking your car and you hear that only too telling scraping noise of your alloy wheel making contact with the kerb? How unsightly will the damage be and how much is that going to cost to repair?

Tyre Insurance is designed to cover the cost of repairing or (subject to a maximum contribution of up to £150, £300 or £450 per tyre) replacing up to four tyres fitted to your vehicle and one spare tyre. It's available for 12, 24, 36 or 48 month durations and permits up to 5 claims throughout the policy duration.

Alloy Wheel insurance is designed to cover the cost of cosmetic repairs to minor scuffs and scrapes of your alloy wheels. In the event the alloy wheel is damaged beyond a point whereby a reasonable cosmetic repair can be carried out, the policy will pay a maximum of £150 (inc’ VAT) towards the replacement of your alloy. It's available for 12, 24, or 36 months and permits 3, 6 or 9 claims respectively).

There is NO excess payable per claim on either policy but there IS an initial 14 day period within which a claim cannot be made.

Tyre & Alloy Wheel Insurance can be bought independently without the need to purchase a GAP Insurance policy.

Please note that all aftermarket/smart repairs to alloy wheels vary from that of an automotive factory finish, which is machine sprayed to a degree beyond that achievable by human capability - in short, repairs may remain slightly visible.

Cover Features

Please see our Cover Features below and compare carefully with any other policy you're considering.

If you cancel the policy within 30 days of purchasing it, so long as no claim has been made we’ll refund your premium in full.

If you cancel the policy more than 30 days after purchasing it, so long as no claim has been made, we'll calculate (on the date of your cancellation request) the value of your remaining unused cover (on a daily pro-rata basis). You will then have the choice of either using that balance towards the cost of a new policy on a new vehicle or, to have the balance refunded.

NO cancellation, transfer or admin fees will apply either way.

If you cancel the policy more than 30 days after purchasing it and you HAVE made a claim, no refund of premium will be given.

Tyre Insurance: The policy is limited in terms of the number of claims that can be made throughout its duration.  It will cover up to 5 repairs or replacements (4 tyres fitted to your vehicle and one spare) however in the event that a tyre is damaged beyond repair and therefore needs to be replaced, the policy will contribute a maximum per tyre of either £150, £300 or £450 (including VAT and subject to the level of cover purchased) towards the replacement cost of your tyre.

Alloy Wheel Insurance: You can make a maximum of 3 claims in any 12 month period and cover is available for up to 3-years. In the event that your alloy wheel is damaged beyond a point whereby a reasonable cosmetic repair can be carried out, the policy will contribute a maximum of £150 (inc’ VAT) towards the cost of replacing the alloy wheel.

Tyre insurance is available for Standard or Run-Flat Tyres

Tyre Insurance: The policy is available for durations of 12, 24, 36 or 48 months

Alloy Wheel Insurance: The policy is available for durations of 12, 24 or 36 months

If you sell your vehicle before the policy ends, so long as no claim has been made we’ll cancel your policy and calculate a daily pro-rata rebate of unused premium.  You can then choose to either carry that balance forward against the cost of a new policy on a new vehicle, or have it refunded.
NO cancellation, transfer or admin fees will apply.

If (by the time of cancellation) you have already made any claim on the policy, no rebate of premium will be given.

Please note that in the event that you sell your vehicle, the policy cannot be transferred to the new owner of your vehicle.

As an anti-fraud measure, it’s not possible to make a claim on the policy within the first 14 days of cover.

If you find that an incident occurs within the first 14 days, please contact us.  We’ll cancel your policy and give you a full refund which you can of course then use against the cost of having your tyre/alloy repaired/replaced and once that’s been done, you can come back to us to take out another policy to protect against future damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

No doubt you'll have questions about how our policies function, so here's a list of the most frequently asked questions

Our Alloy Wheel Insurance policy will NOT cover alloys that are diamond or laser cut, of split rim construction or of polished (chrome) effect.

At present, it is not possible for you to renew a Tyre or Alloy Wheel insurance policy upon expiry.

Our Tyre Insurance policy can be purchased to cover run-flat tyres.

Unfortunately we cannot cover an incident or damage which has occurred prior to the policy being purchased.

With both Tyre & Alloy Wheel Insurance, if the damage can be repaired there’s no financial limit to the cost of the repair per-se however, there is a financial limit to the amount that the policy will contribute towards the cost of replacing your tyre if it is damaged beyond repair or, the amount that it will contribute towards the cost of replacing your Alloy Wheel if the alloy is damaged beyond a point whereby a reasonable cosmetic repair can be carried out.

Those financial limits are as follows:

Tyre Insurance: £150, £300 or £450 (Inc’ VAT) towards the cost of a replacement tyre.

Alloy Wheel Insurance: £150 (Inc’ VAT) towards the cost of a replacement alloy wheel.

We are the broker of the policy, not the underwriter, therefore us going out of business would have no detrimental affect on your policy. Our policies are underwritten by UK General Insurance on behalf of Great Lakes Insurance SE. See "Insurer Details" under "Cover Features" for more information about Great Lakes Insurance SE.

We (Pickles & Burns Ltd) are an Appointed Representative of Frank Pickles (Insurance Brokers) Ltd) who, along with UK General and Great Lakes, are all authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Thus, if you buy a policy from us, you're ultimately covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)

Consequently, in the event that Great Lakes were no longer around at the time of claim, the FSCS would step in to pay up to 90% of that claim for you.

Tyre Insurance: You must report your claim within 30 days of the damage occurring.

Alloy Wheel Insurance: You must report your claim within 14 days of the damage occurring.

Failure to notify a claim within the time periods stated above without good reason, may mean that we cannot check the circumstances of your claim or, that the amount of the claim is more than it would have been than if you had notified us earlier and as a result we may not pay part of all of your claim.

As individual policies, they can be purchased for the following durations:

Tyre Insurance: Can be bought for durations of 12, 24, 36 or 48 months.

Alloy Wheel Insurance: Can be bought for durations of 12, 24 or 36 months.

At present, if you’re buying both Tyre & Alloy Wheel Insurance together, you’d be restricted to either 12, 24 or 36 months.

Tyre Insurance: You can make up to a total of 5 (five) claims throughout the policy duration.

Alloy Wheel Insurance: You can make up to a total of 3 (three) claims in 12 months, 6 (six) claims in 24 months and 9 (nine) claims in 36 months (subject to a maximum of 3 (three) claims in any 12 months of cover) – subject to the duration of cover that you purchase.

Please note that all aftermarket repairs vary from that of an automotive factory finish which is machine sprayed to a degree beyond that achievable by human capability – in other words, repairs to your alloy wheels *may* remain slightly visible.

If you sell your vehicle before the policy ends, so long as no claim has been made we'll cancel your policy and calculate (on a daily pro-rata basis) the value of your remaining unused cover.

You can then choose to either carry that balance forward against the cost of a new policy on a new vehicle, or have it refunded. NO cancellation, transfer or admin fees will apply.

Unfortunately, if you've made a claim on the policy, no rebate of premium will be given.

Please note that in the event that you sell your vehicle the policy cannot be transferred to the new owner of your vehicle.

A tyre must be thoroughly inspected before repair and a repair must only be attempted if specific criteria is met.  Your repairer will be able to provide you with more details.
